Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is My Cut Uneven?

To do the job right, you’ve got to have a level deck. If you notice an uneven finish, then it’s time to level the deck on your Hustler Turf® mower. This helps ensure the mower blade is at the correct distance from the ground on both sides and that it’s positioned correctly from front to back.

To level the deck on your Hustler Turf® riding lawn mower, start by consulting your operator’s manual for detailed instructions as the steps below might vary slightly depending on your model. You also can watch this video for a detailed walkthrough.

How to level your lawn mower deck:

  1. Place your mower on a flat level surface. Turn the engine off and make sure it is cool. Remove the ignition key. Disconnect the spark plug ignition wire and engage the parking brake.
  1. Make sure you are wearing gloves, safety goggles, and any other applicable safety gear.
  1. To level the deck from the front to rear, place the deck lift lever in the middle position.
  1. Rotate the blade closest to the discharge chute parallel to the lawn mower.
  1. Measure the height both the front and rear blades from the tip to the ground. Refer to your operator’s manual for proper height differences between front and rear.
  1. To raise the front of the deck, tighten the hex nut. If the front of the deck needs to be lowered, loosen the hex nut.
  1. Level the deck from side to side by rotating the blades perpendicular to the lawn mower.
  1. Measure the height of the blade tips on each side of the deck from the ground.
  1. Adjust the deck by loosening the hex bolt on the left hangar bracket.
  1. Raise or lower the deck by turning the adjustment gear.
  1. When both blade tips have the same measurement from the ground, tighten the hex bolt.
  1. Reconnect the spark plug ignition wire.

Why won’t my lawn mower start?

Reasons for startup failures on Hustler Turf® riding lawn mowers include:

  • Spark plug issues
  • Fuel-related issues
  • Improper engine operation
  • A disengaged parking brake
  • Engaged blades

How do I troubleshoot a lawn mower that won’t start?

If your Hustler Turf® riding lawn mower won’t start, perform these steps in order. Attempt to start your lawn mower after each one and only proceed to the next if the issue persists. If you need any replacement parts, turn to your local Hustler Turf® dealer for original equipment.

  1. Turn off the mower blades, or PTO shaft, set the brake, and try starting it again. The parking brake must be fully engaged when starting.
  1. Check the fuel level and make sure you’re using fresh fuel if the tank is low. Also check the fuel filter, as it could be blocked.
  1. If your mower has a choke, make sure the engine is choked. If it does not start, check the oil level. If it is low or empty, it could be a sign of internal engine damage. If this is the case, contact an authorized service center.
  1. Check the air filter and replace if it is dirty.
  1. Finally, check the spark plug and replaced if it’s fouled or damaged.

Why Does My Mower Pull In One Direction?

5 Ways To Stop Your Hustler Turf Zero-Turn Lawn Mower From Pulling In One Direction:

Low Or Imbalanced Tire Pressure

Check the tire pressure on each tire and make sure they’re inflated to the recommended level outlined in your operator’s manual. Adjust the pressure as needed and see if the issue resolves. Improper tire pressure can cause your mower to pull to one side.

Cutting Deck Misalignment

Check the cutting deck for any damage or misalignment. If you notice any issues, consider adjusting the deck to ensure it is level and balanced.

Damaged Components

The components of your zero-turn lawn mower will wear down over time, including those that control the steering. Inspect the steering components and replace if you notice any wear or damage. Your local Hustler Turf® dealer will have original equipment replacement parts in stock, you can find the dealer closest to you using this tool.

Faulty Hydraulic System

The hydraulic system controls the movement of the mower’s wheels. Check the hydraulic fluid levels and look for any leaks or damage to the system. If you notice any problems, schedule an appointment with your local Hustler Turf® dealer who can inspect and repair the system.

Improper Handling

If you’re new to using a zero-turn mower, take some time to get used to the controls and maneuvering the machine. Practice making smooth, even turns as this can help alleviate the pulling issue.

Why Is My Mower Loud ?

A lawn mower is usually going to generate some degree of noise, but too much noise can signal a problem. If your Hustler Turf® lawn mower makes too much noise, check for these issues.

Misaligned Engine

Check the engine mounting bolts and ensure they are tightened securely as misalignment can lead to excessive vibrations or noise. If the engine is misaligned, consider readjusting it to its proper position per your operator’s manual.

Exhaust System Problems

Check the exhaust pipe and muffler for any cracks, holes, or signs of damage as this can contribute to excessive noise levels. If you notice any issues with the exhaust system, it may be necessary to repair or replace these components to reduce noise levels. Schedule a service appointment with local Hustler Turf® dealer using this tool.

Damaged Belts

Inspect the belts for any signs of wear, tension, or damage, and replace them if necessary to help reduce noise levels. If the belts are loose, worn, or damaged, they can create noise as they move or slip during operation. Remember, your local Hustler Turf® dealer stocks original equipment replacement parts, you can find the one closest to you using this tool.

Worn Blades

Inspect the blades for any signs of wear, rust, or unevenness. Sharpen or replace the blades as needed to ensure smooth and efficient operation, which can help reduce noise levels during mowing.

Neglect Of Maintenance

Make sure that you have an established maintenance routine that includes cleaning, lubricating, and inspecting key parts of the mower regularly. Regular maintenance can help prolong the life of your mower. Failing to properly maintain your mower can accumulate dirt, debris, and wear, which in turn can lead to excess noise.

Why Am I Scalping My Grass?

When you scalp the grass, the finished product looks uneven or littered with divots. This happens when the mower deck cuts the grass too closely to the ground, resulting in an uneven and unattractive lawn. There are several potential reasons for this issue, and understanding them can help you address the problem effectively.

Deck Height Too Low

One of the most common reasons for grass scalping is the mower deck being set too low. Adjust the deck to a higher setting so that you never reduce the height of your grass by more than one-third when mowing. This helps prevent scalping and promotes healthy grass growth.

Damaged Mower Blades

Inspect the blades for any signs of wear, rust, or damage. Sharpen or replace them if necessary. Sharp blades are essential for a clean and even cut, so regular blade maintenance is key to preventing grass scalping. Remember, your local Hustler Turf® dealer stocks original equipment parts for your mower. You can locate the one closest to you using this tool.

Operating At High Speeds

Slow down your mowing speed, especially when navigating around obstacles or making turns, to minimize the risk of scalping and achieve a more even cut. Mowing too fast, especially on turns, can cause the mower to dig into the lawn.

Improperly Inflated Tires

Check the tire pressure and ensure it is at the recommended level for your mower model. Properly inflated tires can help distribute the weight of the mower more evenly, reducing the likelihood of scalping.

Why Is My Lawn Mower Vibrating?

Most lawn mowers will vibrate during operation, but if your Hustler Turf® unit suddenly experiences an increase in vibration, stop immediately and conduct a routine maintenance check to identify a potential issue.

Why is my lawn mower vibrating?

Increased vibration is a sign there’s an issue with your Hustler Turf® lawn mower. One of the most common causes is that something spinning or turning is not mounted properly or has been damaged. The engine also could need a tune up or a minor repair. Note that engines running at reduced speed sometimes can produce more vibration than at its prescribed peak performance.

Will my lawn mower get damaged from excessive vibration?

Excessive vibration can weaken components, causing them to crack or break. If left untreated, it also can cause parts to loosen and increase the risk of coming apart.

How do I troubleshoot my lawn mower for excessive vibration?

Inspection and proper service of any damaged components is necessary. If assistance is needed with determining the cause of vibration, take your mower to a local authorized Hustler Turf® dealership. You can locate the one closest to you using this tool.
